How to become a pharmacy technician

UKCPA will support you in your evolving pharmacy technician career, enabling you to succeed and grow.

Pharmacy technicians play a vital role in healthcare, ensuring that patients coming to pharmacies receive accurate advice on the medication they have been prescribed. They also inform patients about the potential side-effects and risks of taking their medications.

To qualify as a pharmacy technician, you’ll need to complete a GPhC-approved integrated competency and knowledge-based qualification or course.

The training is vocational and can be delivered face-to-face, at a distance, online or a combination of these. It consists of two years consecutive work-based experience under the direction of a pharmacist or another pharmacy technician.

UKCPA also offers both trainee pharmacist memberships and student pharmacist memberships to connect those who are starting out in their career with educational resources and more.

The roles and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician involve many aspects of pharmaceutical healthcare. This includes preparing medicines and products, giving patients medicines (both over the counter and prescriptions), and offering healthcare advice and ensuring patients and the public are given up to date guidance regarding their medication.

The role of the pharmacy technician is growing, taking on more clinical activities and becoming more patient-facing.

Pharmacy technicians are a vital part of their communities,  operating across different healthcare settings, including GP practices, critical care facilities, hospitals, care homes, and community health hubs.

Pharmacy technician job duties

Pharmacy technicians perform a crucial role in helping the public understand and manage their health. Here is a short list of some day-to-day duties for a pharmacy technician:

  • Assemble prescription medications
  • Handle and provide over the counter and prescription medications
  • Deal with patient queries and concerns
  • Offer health advice and advise on how to take medicines
  • Inform patients about risks and side-effects of medications.

Being a pharmacy technician involves working closely with the public providing a crucial service for communities in a range of settings. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, discretion, and a drive to help people are absolute musts in any pharmacy technician job description.
