A one day meeting bringing together antimicrobial pharmacy professionals.

OVERVIEW

This symposium will cover current, topical aspects of antimicrobial stewardship including the management of patients in secondary care, primary care and community pharmacy with specific infection related issues.

This event will be of particular benefit to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians involved in providing and developing services to support antimicrobial stewardship and looking after patients with infections in secondary care, primary care and community pharmacy.

The symposium is also suitable for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who have recently specialised as well as those who are working at advanced levels.

AIM

The aim of this day is to equip pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with the skills:

  • to identify and understand current initiatives and performance indicators in antimicrobial stewardship.
  • to highlight the importance of cooperating across professions and organisations to optimise pharmaceutical care for patients with infections.
  • to update knowledge for the management of specific infection topics, including urinary tract infections, intravenous to oral antibiotic switch, penicillin allergy and long-term antibiotic prophylaxis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the symposium, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the current initiatives and performance indicators in antimicrobial stewardship for Secondary Care, Primary Care and Community Pharmacy.
  • Define and describe common and successfully used interventions to promote effective antimicrobial stewardship for urinary tract infections in Secondary Care, Primary Care and Community Pharmacy.
  • Define and describe successful strategies to promote intravenous to oral antibiotic switch in Secondary Care.
  • Discuss effective prescribing practices for long term antimicrobial prophylaxis.
  • Define and describe successful strategies for antimicrobial prescribing in patients who report penicillin allergy.
