Turning the Tide: How pharmacists can lead safer fluid therapy

This webinar has been developed in collaboration with Turning the Tide – a UK-registered charity dedicated to improving intravenous (IV) fluid safety, prescribing habits, and stewardship across healthcare.

IV fluids are prescription only medicines and their safe, effective use is an important part of every pharmacist’s role. They are prescribed for the majority of acutely unwell patients, yet around one in five may experience harm as a result.  Despite the introduction of NICE CG174 remains inconsistent but a new wave of action is beginning to turn the tide.  Better fluid management can improve patient safety and outcomes while reducing costs, waste and reducing environmental emissions. Pharmacists have both the responsibility and opportunity to lead this change.  Three international fluid experts come together for this webinar to provide you with the tools to do it.

Aim

The aim of this webinar is to provide attendees with the knowledge and practical tools to lead safer, more effective and sustainable IV fluid management.

Target audience

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians involved in the prescribing, administration, monitoring or optimisation of IV fluids, particularly those caring for acutely unwell patients.

Learning outcomes

After this webinar, attendees should be able to:

• Describe the main recommendations of NICE 174
• Discuss current thinking in the use of IV fluids
• Recognise what pharmacists can contribute to optimising safe and effective use of IV fluids
