Microbiology and Infectious Disease; An Introduction to… series

Session 1 of 4

This first session will provide a brief overview of microbiology and infectious diseases, introducing attendees to some of the key concepts that underpin microbiology and the treatment of infections.

This series is ideal for antimicrobial pharmacists starting out in this speciality, non-specialists and newly qualified pharmacists with an interest in antimicrobial stewardship.

Many of the concepts will focus on the management of infection in hospital setting but the principles and content are universal to all aspects of healthcare provision including community, clinic and non-acute settings.

The aim of this webinar is to introduce attendees to the origins of bacteria and how antimicrobial resistance occurs in response to selective pressure of antimicrobial therapy.

After this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss the origins of bacteria, antibiotics and the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • Introduce the concept of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in response to AMR
  • Define and describe what the role of the pharmacy profession is in AMS
  • Describe how can we improve patient outcomes
